‘200 years on: contemporary works in clay’

Nov 15 – Jan 12, 2013

‘200 years on: contemporary works in clay’ at Nantgarw Chinaworks Museum

Over the past year, the friends of Nantgarw have taken over the lease of the Museum from Rhondda Cynon Taff council.  A small group of us including myself, Anne Gibbs and resident artist Margo Schmidt have starting organising the exhibition schedule, and the first show celebrates 200 years since William Billingsley set-up a fine porcelain factory at Nantgarw.  It’s a very important place as it now combines historical ceramics with what is made today.  It’s also very special due to it’s location and the enthusiasm that is to be had there.

Dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae ‘ffrindiau’ Nantgarw wedi cymryd drosodd y gwaith o redeg yr Amgueddfa gan gyngor Rhondda Cynon Taf. Mae grŵp bychan ohonom gan gynnwys fi fy hun, Anne Gibbs a’r artist preswyl Margo Schmidt wedi dechrau trefnu’r amserlen o drefnu arddangosfeydd, ac mae’r sioe gyntaf yn dathlu 200 mlynedd ers i William Billingsley sefydlu ffatri borslen yn Nantgarw. Mae’n le arbennig iawn gan ei fod bellach yn cyfuno serameg hanesyddol gyda’r hyn yn cael ei wneud ym maes clai heddiw. Mae brwdfrydedd y ‘ffrindiau’, hefyd heb ei ail!

Windows on Wales / Ffenestri ar Gymru

27 July – 22 September 2013, Ruthin Craft Centre

“Six makers’ contemporary response to Edward Pugh’s Cambria Depicta. Windows on Wales – Edward Pugh’s Cambria Depicta gave us a very personal Window on North Wales at the beginning of the 19th Century. 200 years on we are updating this with a series of contemporary women artists’ 21st Century Windows on Wales. The artists are: Eleri Mills, Christine Mills, Julia Griffiths-Jones, Lowri Davies, Luned Rhys Parri and Becky Adams”

I concentrated on a few scenes in Meirionydd (South Gwynedd), and retraced Edward Pugh’s steps around Carndochan Castle and Barmouth.  The drawings were applied to hand-built bone china spill holders.

27 Gorffennaf – 22 Medi 2013, Canolfan Grefft Rhuthun

“Ymateb chwe gwneuthurwr cyfoes i Cambria Depicta Edward Pugh. Roddodd Cambria Depicta Edward Pugh gipolwg personol iawn ar Ogledd Gymru ar ddechrau’r 19fed Ganrif. 200 mlynedd yn ddiweddarach rydym yn diweddaru hyn gyda chyfres o Ffenestri ar Gymru yn y 21fed Ganrif gan artistiaid benywaidd cyfoes. Yr artistiaid yw Eleri Mills, Christine Mills, Julia Griffiths-Jones, Lowri Davies, Luned Rhys Parri a Becky Adams”

Fe wnes i ganolbwyntio ar ychydig o olygfeydd ym Meirionydd, gan olrhain camau Edward Pugh o amgylch Castell Carndochan ac Abermaw. Fe gafodd y darluniau eu gosod ar lestri ‘spill’ wedi eu hadeiladu a llaw mewn clai tsieina.
